This is a condition in which patients have an uncomfortable sensation in their legs causing an uncontrollable urge to keep moving them. It is typically bothersome while trying to sleep or while sitting quietly. It can present at any age but usually worsens as time progresses. These patients typically have difficulty in falling asleep and usually have disturbed sleep. It may be associated with twitching, cramping, aching, crawling sensation, electric shock like sensation.
It is usually a benign condition with no major medical problems.
However few conditions that mimic RLS should be ruled out
- Electrolyte imbalance
- Diabetic neuropathy
- Peripheral neuropathy
- Spinal cord conditions
- Anaemia
The diagnosis of RLS is mainly clinical. The doctor may advise investigations to rule out other conditions mentioned above.
Treatment for Restless Legs Syndrome
- Lifestyle changes involving a balanced diet, plenty of exercise and meditation, avoiding caffeine usually helps.
- Other underlying conditions such as diabetes, anemia, should be controlled.
- Medication – Neuropathic pain medicines, muscle relaxants, opiods and sleep medication as the last resort.
- In rare cases interventional pain management in form of sympathetic plexus block, spinal cord stimulator may be needed.
